I’m Rachel.
I set up Small Type Studio because I am passionate about human made and especially handmade design.
This passion extends across my whole life, whether it is making Christmas presents, painting murals in my home or cooking with homegrown ingredients, I try to create everything from scratch.
After studying graphic design at university, where I shyed away from the computer and explored techniques such as printmaking, letterpress and cartooning, I finally found my place in the world of traditional sign painting.
For over a decade I've been honing my sign making craft, creating beautiful shopfronts in and around Brighton.
More recently I have returned to the world of graphic design to create visual identities for independent brands.
Although my services are geared towards helping businesses I also love to create artwork in the form of personal commissions and am also building up an online shop, full of fun designs forthe home.
I believe that design is a powerful tool, and that by really considering the design choices we make in our businesses, injecting a bit of expression and soul into them with the help of hand crafted elements, we can make the world a more beautiful, connected and uplifting place to live in.
I want the amazing business owners I work with to feel proud of their brand, their story and feel confident in their journey.
My style can be described as fun and friendly and I love combing bright colour and pattern. I get inspiration from folk art and fairground art combined with a playful nostalgia for the 90s.
I have always loved to keep a sketchbook and always have several on the go, filled with observational sketches, side projects, pressed flowers, and daydreams.
When I'm not working on a new design project, you can find me walking my dog Scruff in the woods near my East Sussex home, trying to tame my overgrown garden or snuggled up on the sofa with a good book or cozy video game.
