You’ve decorated and now you're in the market for some personalised wall art for those finishing touches, but what type of wall art should you go for and what are the things you need to consider when choosing it?

In this article, I'm going to outline 5 reasons why lettering is the best option for your personalised wall art and some top tips to help you get your order just right!

  1. You can completely personalise the message

There's a motto here at Small Type, 'custom is king' and I really believe it is true.

It takes a little bit of thinking to come up with the right words but a piece of art that really represents you and wouldn’t exist without you is a whole different experience than resonating with a piece of art and purchasing it (something that is also very fun!) It's an exciting process and creates something you will really treasure forever.

Top tip!

Family names or initials are a popular choice and certainly add a homely feel to your space but if you think outside the box the possibilities are endless! Family sayings, film quotes & poetry are just a few ideas to get you thinking!

2. You can completely customise the colour choices

If you're going for an aesthetic look worthy of Pinterest and Instagram fame then you really cant beat personalised wall art for blending seamlessly with the rest of your decor.

If matching your personalised wall art to your decor is important to you, when enquiring be sure to ask the artist you want to work with what their process is for colour matching.

Top tip!

Beware that on screen swatches will not match physical ones as colours change from screen to screen so make sure you can provide universal colour codes, readily available swatches or alternatively work with an artist who is local so that they can visit your home to match the colours in situe.

3. Personalised wall art can be designed to fit an awkward shape

Got a strange shaped cubby or a space next to the bizarre but much loved statue you picked up on your travels?

Lettered wall art can be dynamically designed to fit into any space, unlike a picture or print, making it perfect for that awkward space you can't fill.

Top tip!

You can ask for a mock up of the piece of art in its final position. Just photograph the space head on, take a measurement for something in the picture and the artist should be able to design something that will fit the space perfectly even if you are working with them remotely.

4. Personalised wall art is a great conversation starter

We all look around spaces in quiet moments at dinner parties and gatherings, a piece of personalised wall art will ensure that there is something interesting to strike up a conversation about.

Top tip!

If telling tales is your thing, pick a theme for your personalised wall art that makes a great story. Perhaps with a travel theme or family history.

5. You are supporting an artist

Sure it's easy to pick up your art from habitat or a thrift shop but artists need to eat too!

Whether you've been following an artist for a while or a search for local artist turns up a bunch of discoveries for you this is the perfect opportunity to support an artist you admire.

Top tip!

For the best lettered art look for signwriters and mural artists. They may advertise commercial services but I guarantee many of them will be delighted to relieve such a fun and personal commission!
